Japan Air Self-Defense Force Reconnaissance Drone Presumed Crashed in Sea of Japan

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) announced on Tuesday that a Global Hawk unmanned reconnaissance aircraft went missing over the Sea of Japan and is presumed to have crashed. The ASDF reported losing communication with the aircraft at approximately 12:58 p.m. while it was flying over the high seas about 50 kilometers off the western prefecture of Tottori. The conclusion that the aircraft crashed followed a search operation in which debris was spotted and photographed floating in the waters off Tottori.

According to the ASDF, the aircraft was not on a training flight, although the military declined to provide further details regarding the nature of the mission. There were no reports of damage to ships in the area. This incident marks the first loss of a Global Hawk since the ASDF deployed the aircraft at Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture in 2022. The missing plane was one of three Global Hawks operated by the ASDF. The Defense Ministry stated it will take necessary measures to ensure that this loss does not disrupt future missions.
