The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) opened applications and nominations on Saturday for the next Supreme Court chief justice. The vacancy arises due to the compulsory retirement of Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on November 6. According to the JBC, the deadline for submitting applications and required documents is October 13 at 4:30 p.m.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will choose the next chief magistrate from a list of nominees screened and vetted by the JBC. The process will include public interviews. The next chief justice will be the 28th person to hold the position and will oversee all courts in the country, including the Court of Appeals, the Sandiganbayan, and the Court of Tax Appeals.
Chief Justice Gesmundo has held the position since April 2021 following his appointment by former president Rodrigo Duterte. In addition to Gesmundo, Associate Justice Amy Lazaro Javier is also scheduled to retire in November. These retirements will reduce the number of Duterte appointees in the Supreme Court to 10, while President Marcos may have three and former president Benigno Aquino III has two.
