Joint Probe Launched After Five Baby Orangutans Rescued in Odisha

Authorities in Odisha have launched a joint investigation into the suspected trafficking of five infant orangutans rescued from a forest in the Balasore district. The animals, consisting of three males and two females aged between six months and one year, were spotted by villagers clinging to trees on Tuesday morning. Because orangutans are native only to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia and Malaysia, officials have ruled out natural migration. The animals are currently being monitored by veterinary doctors and provided with oral rehydration solutions at the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, where they are being kept in quarantine in an air conditioned environment.

The investigation is being conducted by the state police Special Task Force and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau. Investigators are analyzing CCTV footage from airports, ports, and railway stations, and have contacted the Coast Guard to check for sea routes. Local police are specifically focusing on a black SUV spotted by residents and captured on CCTV near the forest on Monday night. State Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia stated that the high international value of the animals, which can fetch between 20 and 25 lakh rupees, suggests the involvement of an international smuggling racket. The state government has requested approval from the Central Zoo Authority to keep the juveniles in Odisha.
