José Dirceu, the 80 year old former minister and PT candidate for the Chamber of Deputies, announced that he has completed treatment for lymphoma. Dirceu was diagnosed with the disease in May while hospitalized at the Hospital Sírio Libanês in São Paulo. He stated on social media that medical exams indicate the disease is in remission.
Following the conclusion of his treatment, Dirceu noted that he will remain at home for the final month of the election campaign to focus on his recovery. He expressed gratitude to his medical team, including doctors Raul Cutait and Celso Arrais, as well as his family and supporters.
Dirceu returned to the political scene this year following an invitation from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This marks his first election since the Supreme Federal Court annulled his convictions from the Lava Jato operation in late 2024. Those previous convictions had involved charges of passive corruption, money laundering, and criminal organization related to the 2010 elections.
