A Massachusetts jury is currently deliberating whether Lindsay Clancy is criminally responsible for the 2023 deaths of her three children: 5 year old Cora, 3 year old Dawson, and 8 month old Callan. The former labor and delivery nurse does not deny strangling the children, but the trial centers on her mental state at the time of the killings. Following the deaths, Clancy attempted suicide by jumping from a second story window, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.
Defense attorneys argue that Clancy suffered from postnatal psychosis, a rare mental illness following childbirth, which caused her to lose her grip on reality. Evidence presented included a stay in a psychiatric hospital as Clancy sought treatment for worsening mental health in the months before the killings. Prosecutors contend that Clancy knew what she was doing and made a conscious choice to kill her children because she was depressed and tired of living.
The jury began deliberations on Thursday in Plymouth County Superior Court after hearing testimony from more than 70 prosecution witnesses and 10 defense witnesses over five weeks. As of Monday, the jury had spent three days deliberating without reaching a verdict.
