A jury in Massachusetts remains deadlocked after five days of deliberations in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a 36 year old former nurse accused of killing her three children in January 2023. The children, Cora, aged 5, Dawson, aged 3, and Callan, aged 8 months, were strangled with exercise bands in the family home in Duxbury. Following the killings, Clancy attempted suicide by cutting her wrists and neck and jumping from a second story window, an act that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Judge William Sullivan has twice instructed the jury to reexamine their positions and attempt to reach a unanimous verdict, most recently issuing a special final instruction known as the Tuey Rodriguez charge. If the jury cannot reach a unanimous decision, the judge may declare a mistrial. The defense argues that Clancy suffered from a severe postpartum psychosis and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity. The prosecution contends that the killings were planned. The trial has sparked a broader public debate regarding the treatment of postpartum mental health in the United States. Outside the courthouse, a 56 year old retired nurse named Dawn Light was arrested and charged with aggravated intimidation of witnesses and jurors after she allegedly filmed jurors leaving the building. Light has pleaded not guilty, with her attorney stating she only intended to take a photo of the defendant.
