Karnataka Minister B Nagendra Resigns Over Valmiki Corporation Scam Allegations

Karnataka Minister B Nagendra resigned from the state Cabinet and his seat in the Legislative Assembly on Friday. The resignation follows allegations of his involvement in the embezzlement of approximately 89 crore rupees from the state run Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. This marks the second time Nagendra has resigned over the same issue; he previously stepped down in June 2024 before being re inducted into the Cabinet on August 3 under Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

The controversy began in May 2024 after P. Chandrasekharan, an accounts superintendent at the corporation, died by suicide. He left a note alleging unauthorized transfers of funds from the corporation to various accounts. Subsequent investigations by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate were launched. The opposition BJP and JD(S) mounted significant pressure on the government, including protests during the monsoon session and the planning of a 10 day foot march from Raichur to Ballari starting September 1.

During a press conference, a tearful Nagendra stated he was resigning voluntarily to avoid embarrassment to his party. He denied any role in the scam and challenged the BJP to face him in the Ballari Rural constituency. Outlets with a center lean and center right lean highlighted Nagendra's claims that he was a victim of the BJP's anti tribal mindset and manuvadi politics. Meanwhile, a center left lean source emphasized the political calculations behind the move, noting that the resignation followed discussions between Chief Minister Shivakumar and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, as well as potential pressure from Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot regarding prosecution sanctions.
