Kenyan President William Ruto has directed Tata Chemicals to stop its operations in Kenya. The decision follows a dispute over the company's century old mining rights and its operations at the Magadi Soda factory, which produces soda ash for use in glass and other manufacturing processes. Ruto stated that the company's presence had not benefited the country and alleged that Tata Chemicals failed to build sufficient local industrial capacity or factories in Kajiado. The Kenyan government intends to bring in two new companies to take over the operations, with plans to establish a glass company and a chemical company in the region. Tata Chemicals had previously stated in late July that the government ordered the suspension of operations and the halting of soda ash exports. Tata Chemicals could not be reached for immediate comment.
