The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) has selected Lee Chang-dong's new feature film, "Possible Love," as South Korea's official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at next year's Academy Awards. The selection committee praised the film for its cinematic completeness, the clarity of the director's message, and its excellent mise-en-scene. The film is scheduled for a world premiere in the main competition section of the Venice International Film Festival next month.
This project marks Lee's first feature film in eight years since the 2018 film "Burning." The story focuses on the intertwined lives of two married couples: a laid-off worker named Ho-seok and his wife Mi-ok, and a documentary filmmaker named Ye-ji and her affluent husband Sang-woo. The cast includes Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong.
During a press conference, Lee described the film as an exploration of how love upholds life and how it is possible amidst life-transforming events like job loss. He noted that the film was produced with investment from Netflix, though it will open in Korean theaters on September 23 before becoming available on Netflix on November 6. Lee stated that he hopes audiences view the layoff in the film as a general reflection on identity and the vulnerability of workers in the face of growing technology rather than as a critique of a specific company.
