Leonardo DiCaprio Urges Protection of Critically Endangered Chilean Frog Amid Energy Project

Actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio has called for the protection of the Pehuenche frog, a critically endangered amphibian found only in the high Andes of Chile and Argentina. In an Instagram post, DiCaprio warned that fewer than 1,000 individuals remain and highlighted the threat posed by the Los Condores Rio Diamante electrical interconnection project. The project, driven by Enel Generacion Chile, involves building a 500 kilovolt transmission line and approximately 72 high voltage towers over 26.6 kilometers of Chilean territory in the Maule region. DiCaprio clarified that conservationists are not seeking to stop the project entirely, but rather requesting that it be relocated to avoid putting the species at further risk.

The project has faced local opposition, including a unanimous rejection by the Maule Regional Government and its 20 regional councilors in July. Following DiCaprio's post, a decisive meeting of the Environmental Evaluation Commission regarding a favorable report from the Environmental Evaluation Service was suspended, though no official reason for the delay was provided. Environment Minister Francisca Toledo responded by stating that the project is still under environmental evaluation and defended Chile's robust environmental institutional framework.
