A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, August 10, 2026, causing significant destruction and leaving at least 20 people dead. The epicenter was located near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco province, with the tremor occurring at a depth reported between 79 and 107 kilometers. The earthquake was felt across much of Colombia, as well as in neighboring Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. Authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat.
Casualties and structural damage were concentrated in several cities. In Pereira, Mayor Mauricio Salazar reported 18 deaths. In Manizales, Mayor Jorge Eduardo Rojas reported two deaths and the collapse of over 10 buildings and 20 homes, including damage to the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica. In Cali, Mayor Alejandro Eder stated that at least 20 buildings collapsed with people trapped inside. Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba Curi reported injuries and severe building damage in Quibdo, the capital of Choco. In Bogota, Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan reported only minor cracks in buildings, though many residents evacuated as a precaution.
President Abelardo de la Espriella assumed direct leadership of the emergency response, ordering the installation of a Unified Command Post and announcing a visit to Pereira. The Colombian civil aviation authority suspended operations at six airports, including those in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdo, Armenia, Cartago, and Buenaventura, to assess structural damage. International offers of assistance were made by Israel and Mexico, while the United States monitored the situation.
Some reports noted the severity of the event by comparing it to twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June, which caused over 6,000 deaths. Local officials in Manizales and Cali requested additional rescue personnel from other major cities to assist in search and recovery efforts.
