Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has successfully undergone elective laparoscopic surgery to treat a para-umbilical abdominal hernia. According to the head of his medical team, Sri Ranga Abdullah Ramaiah, the procedure went smoothly and the Prime Minister is currently undergoing physiotherapy under the supervision of medical experts.
Anwar's aide previously stated that the premier would be under observation for two days. Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah called for prayers for his health so that he may return to his duties. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also issued a statement on X wishing his counterpart a swift recovery.
Anwar, who turned 79 on Monday, has a history of recurrent shoulder and back problems, including a hospitalization in 2018 and a cancelled trip to Pahang state last November. However, a hospital statement noted that he was issued a clean bill of health following a routine medical examination in January.
