The military junta in Bamako and the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA) recently conducted a prisoner exchange in the northern town of Anéfis. The FLA released 22 members of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), while the junta released nine combatants from the independentist movement. This follows a previous release on August 13 involving 86 FAMa personnel and two Russian mercenaries from the Africa Corps.
The release of the Russian mercenaries occurred after two years of captivity. These individuals were captured on July 27, 2024, during fighting near Tinzawatène. Negotiations for their release involved the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and Saddam Haftar, the deputy commander in chief of the eastern Libyan government. Reports indicate that Haftar paid a ransom for the mercenaries, who were moved through Benghazi before being returned to Russian authorities.
The conflict involves a coalition between the FLA and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which is the Sahelian branch of Al-Qaeda. This alliance was highlighted during a coordinated attack on April 25 that allowed Alghabass Ag Intalla to retake Kidal, marking a significant military setback for the Malian army and Russian forces. The Malian junta has increasingly relied on Russia and the Africa Corps for security after breaking ties with France following coups in 2020.
