Man Arrested in Connection with Death of Black Woman Found Hanging in Mississippi

Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested 51 year old Jarques Ratliff in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29 year old Black woman found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in August. The arrest followed a determination by the state medical examiner on Thursday that Fortune's death was a homicide. Chief RaShall Brackney stated that Ratliff, who is also Black, had an association with Fortune, though police declined to elaborate on the nature of their relationship or the motive for the crime. Ratliff has been charged with murder and is scheduled for his first court appearance on Monday.

Chief Brackney noted that the investigation remains active and that additional arrests may be pending after investigators interviewed 15 people. Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey, expressed relief at the news but noted that the family still lacks many answers. Spivey had previously expressed frustration over a perceived lack of communication and inaction from local officials prior to the arrest.

The case has drawn national attention due to Mississippi's history of racial violence and lynching. Reports from center left sources highlight that this event follows other hanging deaths in the state within the last year, including those of Trey Reed and Cory Zukatis, though those cases were ruled suicides. A center source further noted that over 50 members of Congress have called for an independent investigation into a pattern of Black people found hanging in numerous states, citing concerns over modern day lynchings.
