Man Detained After Destroying Wine Bottles in São Paulo Supermarket

A 29 year old man was detained by military police on Monday morning after destroying a wine section at a supermarket in Dourado, São Paulo. The man used a helmet to break multiple bottles and threw others against the floor and a glass door. The incident lasted approximately two to two and a half minutes. No injuries were reported among the customers and employees present.

Reports on the financial loss vary between R$ 50 thousand and R$ 60 thousand. According to the supermarket manager, the man began the rampage after his credit card was declined during a purchase attempt. The manager also alleged that the suspect had previously damaged a tree near the store and had knocked over a motorcycle before entering the establishment. The São Paulo State Public Security Secretariat stated that the man threatened people during a possible psychotic break.

The man surrendered without resistance when police arrived. While one source reports he was detained, another specifies he was released after providing a statement. The supermarket management issued a statement repudiating the act and praising the professionalism of their staff.
