Robert Alexander, 66, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years for the murder of his wife, Christina Alexander. The 60 year old nurse was killed in June of last year at their home in Dosthill, Tamworth. During the attack, Alexander stabbed his wife 77 times, strangled her, and struck her with a dog food can. Evidence presented at Stafford Crown Court showed the victim suffered catastrophic wounds across her face, body, arms, legs, and neck.
Following the killing, Alexander told arriving police officers that he had disposed of his wife. During his trial, he claimed he had no memory of the incident and asserted that he lost the plot after being struck in the stomach. However, Judge Avik Mukherjee stated that the evidence showed Alexander was aware his partner intended to leave him and that the killing occurred within a context of coercive and controlling behavior, specifically regarding financial matters.
A jury unanimously convicted Alexander in June after a 14 day trial. The judge described the assault as repeated and sustained, noting that the ferocity of the attack caused the victim to succumb to her injuries quickly. The judge further warned Alexander that there is no guarantee he will be released after the minimum term elapses.
