A 41 year old man will be charged on September 2 for allegedly driving under the influence of etomidate and causing the death of a 66 year old woman. The incident occurred on July 11, 2025, along Pipit Road near Block 52A Circuit Road, where the man lost control of a rented car. The vehicle crashed through a car park barrier, crossed a two lane road, and mounted the kerb before colliding with a temporary night market stall. The stall attendant was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police investigations revealed that the driver did not have a valid driving licence and had used a vaporiser containing etomidate before driving. Following the crash, the man and a male passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene without rendering assistance. The man was arrested the next day after police identified him through cameras and ground inquiries.
The vehicle was a GetGo rental car booked under the account of the male passenger, who held a valid licence. No further action will be taken against the passenger because he has since died in an unrelated traffic accident. GetGo stated that the car was not driven by an authorized user, which constituted a severe breach of their terms of service.
The man faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing death, driving under the influence of drugs, and driving without a valid licence. If convicted, he could face up to eight years in prison, a fine of up to 20,000 dollars, or both. The Singapore Police Force described driving under the influence of drugs as an extremely dangerous and irresponsible act.
