Chongtham Vikram Singh, a 54 year old musician from Manipur, died on Monday after being assaulted by a group of men outside his home in Delhi's Kilokari village. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday when Singh reportedly confronted a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff regarding shouting and noise outside his residence. According to reports, the confrontation escalated and Singh was chased into his building and beaten in the corridor of his third floor flat. His son, Yaiphaba, took him to a private hospital in Okhla, where he later succumbed to injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
Delhi Police have arrested seven men and detained a 15 year old boy. The arrested individuals are identified as Bharat Kumar, Pramod, Ramzan Khan, Deepanshu, Mohan Vishwakarma, Vijay, and Mannu. Police stated that several of the accused worked as delivery and packaging staff for nearby dhabas. An FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 103(2), which pertains to murder committed by a group of five or more persons.
Singh was a respected figure in the music community, having served as a music teacher in Delhi for 17 years and previously playing as the lead guitarist for the Manipuri rock band Phoenix. Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh called for a swift investigation and shared CCTV footage of the suspects. The North East Media Forum condemned the killing and urged police to investigate whether the attack involved racial or identity based targeting. Meanwhile, Congress Rajya Sabha member Pawan Khera suggested the incident reflected a culture of impunity regarding public nuisance.
