Manoj Jarange-Patil to lead solo march to Mumbai for Maratha quota protest

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil announced on September 14, 2026, that he will travel to Mumbai on September 15 to stage a protest at Azad Maidan. The decision follows a police denial of permission for his indefinite hunger strike in the capital, which authorities cited as a security concern due to the ongoing Ganeshotsav festivities. Jarange-Patil, who is on the 16th day of an indefinite fast, stated that he will be accompanied by only 10 people and two ambulances to prevent the government from blaming the Maratha community for any unrest during the festival. He described the journey as his final battle and stated he would fight until his last breath.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged the activist to reconsider the protest to avoid inconveniencing devotees. Fadnavis asserted that the government has not stopped dialogue and that most demands have been met, though some remain subject to court rulings and constitutional laws. Jarange-Patil continues to demand a Government Resolution allowing Marathas to claim reservation available to the Kunbi community in the Other Backward Classes category, a move opposed by OBC groups who fear their benefits will be reduced. While Jarange-Patil warned that the community would decide the fate of political leaders in future polls, he noted that he remains open to discussions provided there is direct implementation rather than hollow assurances.
