Massive wildfires across France and Spain have forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes as authorities race to contain the blazes before a new heatwave arrives. In southwestern France's Gironde department, over 220,000 people were displaced as flames approached within 15 kilometers of Bordeaux and devastated approximately 42,000 hectares. In Spain, fires in Madrid, Ávila, Toledo, and Valencia have forced between 60,000 and 100,000 people to flee or seek shelter; the blaze in Ávila has been described as one of the largest in recent Spanish history.
Firefighters are facing a critical window on Monday and Tuesday to make progress before another heatwave is forecast to last from Wednesday until Sunday.
