Measles Outbreak in Bangladesh Claims Nearly 1,000 Children's Lives

A severe measles epidemic in Bangladesh has resulted in nearly 1,000 child deaths since March. Health ministry figures indicate that at least 986 children have died, while the total number of suspected and confirmed cases has exceeded 180,000. Hospitals in the country are currently full, with more than 1,000 suspected cases reported daily.

Medical professionals note that most cases occur in children between six months and five years old. Many of these children arrive at hospitals critically ill, with malnutrition further weakening their ability to fight the virus. The disease is highly contagious and can lead to complications such as brain swelling and severe breathing problems.

Government officials and health experts state that the outbreak was exacerbated by gaps in vaccination coverage. A planned 2024 vaccination drive was delayed by political instability and the uprising that toppled former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. While a mass vaccination drive has since been rolled out to close these gaps, case numbers continue to climb. Epidemiologist Mahmudur Rahman suggested that the country should consider a broader vaccination campaign and increase public awareness regarding preventive measures like isolation and handwashing.
