A memorial statue of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was vandalized with red spray paint on Sunday outside the headquarters of Turning Point USA in Phoenix, Arizona. The bronze statue and an accompanying sign were defaced days after the memorial was unveiled on Thursday to mark one year since Kirk's death. Tyler Bowyer, the chief operating officer of Turning Point, stated that the vandals scratched out the cross and Jesus and sprayed red paint on the statue's neck.
Turning Point USA, the youth focused organization co founded by Kirk, noted that the neck was the location where Kirk was shot during the attack that killed him. Kirk was a staunch ally of Donald Trump and was fatally shot while speaking to students at Utah Valley University. A man named Tyler Robinson has pleaded not guilty to murder charges and faces a possible death penalty.
Phoenix police received calls regarding the vandalism on Sunday morning. Turning Point said they are reviewing footage and working with law enforcement to identify the perpetrators, while confirming they will restore the statue and replace the signs.
