Met Office Warns Autumn Rain May Not Reverse UK Drought

The Met Office has warned that expected autumn rainfall may not be sufficient to reverse drought conditions currently affecting all of Wales and 71.3 percent of England. Chief meteorologist Will Lang stated that while wetter and windier conditions are typical for autumn, it remains uncertain whether the volume of rain will be enough to alleviate the drought. In some areas, such as the South East, July rainfall was as low as one percent of the expected average, with regions including Hampshire and West Sussex experiencing 59 consecutive days without rain.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited the Met Office in Exeter and noted that the country could face floods following the drought due to El Niño. He called for an acceleration in the transition to clean energy to address the changing climate. Similarly, Labour MP Chris Hinchliff urged the government to take urgent action, suggesting the creation of a nature restoration workforce to plant trees and restore wetlands to improve water storage.
