Meta Releases Muse Glimmer AI Model as Zuckerberg Advocates for Open Source Superintelligence

Meta released a new open weight artificial intelligence model called Muse Glimmer on Monday, August 10. The model is a 30 billion parameter small language model designed to run locally on personal computers, such as a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU, rather than relying on cloud connectivity. Developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, Muse Glimmer is optimized for agentic tasks, which include planning actions, executing code, and organizing files. The model is available for free download via Hugging Face under the Apache 2.0 license. Meta also announced plans to release the weights for its more powerful foundation model, Muse Spark 1.2, in the coming weeks.

The product launch coincided with a 6,500 word essay by CEO Mark Zuckerberg titled "The Future Is For Everyone." In the manifesto, Zuckerberg argued against the centralization of AI power in the hands of a few companies or governments. He advocated for "personal superintelligence," where individuals have access to powerful AI agents tailored to their own goals and values. Zuckerberg specifically criticized the closed model approach of rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, suggesting that distributing AI power widely creates a necessary system of checks and balances. He also urged the United States government to reduce restrictions on training data to ensure American open source models remain competitive against foreign labs, particularly those in China.

Beyond the technology, Meta announced a 1 billion dollar fund to support communities located near its data centers in the United States. This move follows public opposition to the environmental and resource impact of data center expansion. Zuckerberg also addressed AI safety, suggesting that the government should focus on regulating the physical production of harmful materials rather than the spread of knowledge.
