- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
Mexican soldiers killed Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, known as El Wicho or R5, during an operation in the state of Michoacán. The Mexican government identified Barragán Chávez as a leader of the Cártel de Los Reyes, a criminal organization operating in the western region of the country. According to Omar García Harfuch, the head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, the suspect died alongside another alleged gang member in Tocumbo after they attacked federal agents. The operation involved the Secretariat of National Defense, the National Guard, the Fiscalía, and the Michoacán Police.
Barragán Chávez was allegedly responsible for extorting avocado producers in Michoacán and was wanted for extradition to the United States on charges related to drug and weapons trafficking. The U.S. Department of State had offered a reward of 3 million dollars for information leading to his arrest. U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson praised the Mexican authorities for the operation, stating that it demonstrates the results of maintaining pressure on criminal organizations.
While a center source framed the event as part of an escalating anti crime campaign, a center right source framed the event as a successful result of bilateral pressure and cooperation between Mexico and the United States.
