Minnesota has filed a lawsuit in a Texas federal court to force Governor Greg Abbott to extradite an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The agent, Christian Castro, is wanted on charges related to a January shooting during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. According to the lawsuit, Governor Abbott has refused to fulfill his obligation to transfer Castro for trial for nearly three months.
Castro is charged with four counts of second degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime. Federal prosecutors subsequently dropped charges against Sosa-Celis and his housemate, and ICE officials stated that Castro and another agent appeared to have made untruthful statements.
Minnesota officials argue that Castro is a flight risk with connections to Mexico. The lawsuit notes that Castro could be released from custody as soon as next week if the extradition is not approved. Governor Abbott's office declined to comment on the pending matter.
