Mirtha Legrand Hospitalized for Respiratory Issues

Mirtha Legrand, the 99 year old icon of Argentine television, has been hospitalized at the Sanatorio Mater Dei due to a bronchial respiratory condition. The conductor was admitted on Monday after suffering from bronchitis since the previous week, which led her to miss the recording of her program. Her granddaughter, Juana Viale, filled in as the host during her absence.

According to official medical reports from the clinic, Legrand is staying in a standard room to undergo routine studies and complete her medical treatment. Recent updates indicate that she spent the night without complications, remained fever free, and has maintained a positive mood while communicating with loved ones via telephone. A tomography report shared by journalist Mercedes Ninci noted a 14 millimeter hematoma and inflammatory signs in the lungs, which were described as common sequelae of viral processes in elderly patients. Some reports suggest she could be discharged as early as Wednesday if her condition continues to improve.

Medical experts have commented on the risks associated with her age. Cardiologist Jorge Tartaglione explained that bronchitis in a 99 year old is more impactful than in younger patients due to reduced lung capacity and immunosenescence, a biological phenomenon that slows the immune response. He emphasized that early hospitalization is a preventive measure to monitor oxygen levels and prevent the condition from progressing to pneumonia.

Legrand has a history of recent health challenges, including a strong flu in April that kept her off the air for three weeks. In 2023, she underwent surgery at the same sanatorium to receive a modern pacemaker, following a coronary obstruction in 2021 and an abdominal surgery in 2019.
