A 70 year old hiker named Craig Berg was rescued on Saturday after being missing for a week on Isle Royale, a remote island in Michigan. According to the US Coast Guard, Berg was found injured and hypothermic but remained alive and alert. He was located with the assistance of Michigan state police troopers, K-9 units, and backpackers.
Berg had been missing since September 5 during a planned nine day solo backpacking trip. Search and rescue operations began on September 6 after Berg failed to return home as planned. Search crews focused on Rock Harbor and the Greenstone Ridge trail, where a trail camera had captured the hiker on August 30.
A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from US Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City hoisted Berg from the island and transported him to Marquette regional airport in Gwinn, Michigan, which is located 140 miles away. Berg's son, Evan, stated that his father was in rough shape but was able to speak and ask for food and water.
Isle Royale is a roadless national park where ground teams must navigate dense boreal forest and rocky ridges on foot. The rescue concluded a multi agency operation involving the National Park Service and local officials.
