Modi and Pezeshkian Discuss Maritime Security Ahead of BRICS Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held talks on Friday to discuss the protection of freedom of navigation, commerce, and the safety of seafarers. According to India's foreign ministry, the meeting occurred on the eve of the BRICS leaders' summit in New Delhi. Modi reiterated India's position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy while emphasizing the need for lasting peace and stability in the region.

India is currently balancing complex relationships with Iran, Israel, and Arab nations. The country has been significantly impacted by attacks on vessels in the region, which have resulted in the deaths of at least 10 Indians. While New Delhi has condemned Tehran's attacks on ships and energy infrastructure, the two nations previously signed a joint declaration at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek on August 31 condemning Western sanctions and the U.S. Israeli military campaign against Iran.

During the BRICS Business Forum, Modi stated that global trade requires secure sea lanes and open supply routes. President Pezeshkian called on the BRICS bloc to prevent countries from using economic instruments to disrupt the legitimate trade of others.

In separate meetings on Friday, Prime Minister Modi also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These discussions focused on trade, energy, and defense ties, including cooperation in civil nuclear energy and critical minerals. India remains one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, with Russia's share of Indian crude imports reaching a record 51 percent in July.
