A 22 year old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault after her 2 year old son died following alleged abuse by the woman and her partner in Yokohama. The mother, Tomomi Fujii, admitted to investigators that she kicked her son in the back on August 17 because she got irritated. The boy was found in cardiopulmonary arrest at an apartment on the evening of August 17 and was confirmed dead on August 18.
Police have also arrested the mother's partner, 36 year old company employee Isamu Saito, on suspicion of injury. Saito is alleged to have punched the boy and shaken his body, as well as kicking the child in the face on a separate occasion, causing an injury to the right cheek. The boy was found to have multiple subcutaneous bruises across his body, and authorities are investigating whether the child was routinely assaulted by the pair.
Fujii, who resides in Yamaguchi Prefecture, met Saito via social media around September of last year. She traveled to Yokohama with her three children to stay at Saito's home starting on August 14. Both sources report the facts of the arrests and the timeline of events similarly.
