Muslim IPS Officer Transferred in West Bengal Amid Controversy Over Islamic Greetings

The West Bengal government transferred IPS officer Bushara Bano on Monday, moving her from her role as Additional Superintendent of Police in Kharagpur to Deputy Commandant of the State Armed Police 4th Battalion. The transfer occurred as part of a minor administrative reshuffle that included the posting of two West Bengal Police Service officers. The move follows a complaint by the Hindu Legal Fund and criticism from other social media accounts regarding a video Bano posted online. In the video, Bano discussed how the Residential Coaching Academy at Aligarh Muslim University helped her prepare for the civil service exam. The Hindu Legal Fund alleged that Bano used Islamic greetings such as Assalamualaikum, Inshallah, and Jazakallah instead of national expressions like Vande Mataram or Jai Hind, arguing that a serving officer should maintain neutrality in public communication.

Government officials described the transfer as a routine act. However, the Opposition has linked the move to the complaints regarding Bano's language. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra criticized the decision on social media, calling the transfer ridiculous and suggesting it was fueled by hate and bigotry. Outlets with a center right lean framed the event as a controversy where the government is defending a routine administrative move against Opposition claims. In contrast, outlets with a left lean framed the event as the government sidelining a Muslim officer in response to pressure from Hindutva groups.
