NATO Deploys Fighter Jets as Drones Enter Estonian Airspace Amid Russia Ukraine Attacks

NATO scrambled Turkish fighter jets based at Amari Air Base on September 1 after drones entered or approached Estonian airspace. The incidents occurred during a large scale exchange of aerial attacks between Russia and Ukraine. Estonian Air Force Commander Brigadier General Riivo Valge reported that around a dozen drones were detected near the border at approximately 2 a.m. while Ukrainian drones targeted western Russia. One drone entered southeastern Estonia, while another flew toward the border city of Narva before turning back toward Russia. Estonia activated ground based air defense units and issued public warnings to residents in eight eastern counties. No drones crashed in Estonia and the fighter jets did not open fire. The alert was lifted around 5:30 a.m. with no casualties or damage reported.

Similar activity was reported in neighboring countries. Latvia raised its air surveillance level in the northeast after detecting drones near its border with Russia, which also triggered NATO jet deployments. Finland restricted aviation and navigation in the eastern Gulf of Finland due to the potential presence of drones. In Romania, a resident discovered a damaged drone containing explosives in a field near the Moldovan border. Romanian Intelligence Service specialists carried out a controlled detonation of the device. No casualties or property damage were reported in Romania.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that NATO reacted exactly as planned and described the incidents as a direct consequence of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. He emphasized the need for increased pressure on Russia to end the conflict. Previous incursions have occurred in the region, including a NATO jet intercepting a drone over Estonia in May and Romanian forces destroying a suspected naval drone in the Black Sea on August 20.
