A consortium led by Naver Cloud Corp. has been selected by the Ministry of Science and ICT to develop an artificial intelligence foundation model specialized in cybersecurity. The Naver Cloud consortium beat a rival group led by SK Telecom Co. by earning high marks for its development strategy, technological capabilities, and broad industry, academia, and research partnerships. The project aims to create a sovereign AI model tailored to the security environment of South Korea to address cyber risks from evolving AI technologies.

The consortium consists of 32 companies and institutions, including LG CNS Co. and LG Uplus Corp. To support the project, the government will provide up to 256 Nvidia B200 graphics processing units over the next 10 months. The consortium plans to supplement this with 4,000 B200 GPUs from Naver Cloud and 256 H200 GPUs from LG. These resources will be used to train two models based on Naver's HyperCLOVA X and LG's EXAONE foundation models. One model will be optimized for defensive cybersecurity tasks while the other will focus on offensive capabilities.

The training process will utilize approximately 830 terabytes of data from Naver Cloud, LG CNS, and organizations that operate industrial systems and critical national infrastructure. The resulting models will be tested across seven strategic sectors: energy, finance, science and technology, telecommunications, semiconductors, defense, and aerospace. The ministry expects to sign a contract with the consortium later this month to begin full scale development.
