Netanyahu Orders Removal of Unauthorized West Bank Settler Outposts

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the evacuation and dismantling of unauthorized settler outposts in the West Bank, according to sources and Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. The order targets outposts established without official state authorization, which typically consist of prefabricated caravans. Finance Minister Smotrich stated that the instruction specifically applies to locations built in Areas A and B, though he noted that he does not support the move. The Israeli prime minister's office and the military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Reports indicate the decision follows pressure from the United States to address settler violence. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee recently described violent settlers as terrorists and called for severe consequences for their actions. While the Israeli government has condemned settler violence, critics note that perpetrators are rarely prosecuted. According to the organization Peace Now, there are 340 outposts in the West Bank alongside 146 settlements formally recognized by the Israeli government.

Legal perspectives on the territory vary. Most governments and U.N. bodies consider all Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law, while Israel argues the territory is disputed rather than occupied. In a separate development, Israel's Supreme Court ruled on Sunday that defense authorities must ensure the safe return of three Palestinian families to their homes in the village of Jalud after they were forced out by settlers.
