The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has provisionally suspended Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios after he tested positive for cocaine. The 31 year old provided a sample on June 22 during an ATP 250 event in Mallorca, Spain. A World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, on July 17. The provisional suspension has been in effect since August 4. While suspended, Kyrgios is prohibited from playing, coaching, or attending any events sanctioned by the ATP, WTA, Grand Slams, or national associations.
Kyrgios acknowledged the result on Instagram, stating that he made a huge mistake and taking full responsibility. He apologized to his family, sponsors, fans, and specifically to the children who follow him. In his statement, Kyrgios provided context by explaining that persistent injuries over the last two years have taken a significant physical and mental toll on him. He noted that coming to terms with the end of his career has been harder than he imagined. He announced that he would step away from public life and social media for 28 days to focus on his wellbeing.
