The Nigerian Army has deployed 86 troops to the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB). The personnel, designated as Nigerian Company 5 (NIGCOY 5 ESSMGB), departed from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja via a Nigerian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft.
Before the departure, Major General Mayirenso Saraso, the army's Chief of Operations, issued directives to the troops. Represented by Brigadier General MM Idris, the Director of Peace Support Operations, Saraso urged the personnel to maintain professionalism, discipline, and operational excellence. He specifically instructed the troops to respect the laws and customs of the host nation and to maintain zero tolerance for substance abuse, indiscipline, the irresponsible use of social media, and sexual exploitation and abuse.
The Nigerian Army stated that this deployment reaffirms Nigeria's commitment to regional peace and security. The army noted that it remains one of Africa's leading contributors to peacekeeping missions under the African Union, the United Nations, and ECOWAS. The ESSMGB mission is designed to support security sector reforms and preserve political stability in Guinea-Bissau following a history of military interventions and political crises.
