Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari stated that he is ashamed of the delays surrounding the expansion of the Mumbai-Goa Highway and will not attend its eventual inauguration. Speaking at the opening of a 5.15km elevated road in the Porvorim suburb north of Panaji, Gadkari described the delays as hopelessly delayed and unfortunate. He noted that contractors had failed and expressed a desire for his department to hold a record for blacklisting the largest number of contractors and suspending officials in a single year.
The project to convert the two lane highway into a four lane road began in 2011 with the goal of reducing travel time from twelve hours to six hours. Gadkari reported that the highway is currently 93 to 94 percent complete and announced plans to travel from Mumbai to Goa by car in October to assess the remaining work. Some stretches of the highway have stalled for long periods, and there have been social media concerns regarding construction quality.
During the same event, Gadkari inaugurated the 6 lane Porvorim flyover. Built at an estimated cost of 364.68 crore rupees by RRSM Infra Private Limited, the corridor is intended to ease traffic bottlenecks connecting the state capital with Mopa Airport and popular beaches such as Calangute and Anjuna.
