North Korea Warns of New Deterrent Ahead of U.S. and South Korea Military Drills

North Korea has warned that it will respond with a new level of deterrent to the upcoming annual joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises are scheduled to run from Monday until August 27. A spokesperson for North Korea's foreign ministry, reporting via the Korean Central News Agency, described the drills as rehearsals for an invasion and an effort by Washington to master modern warfare tactics.

Pyongyang stated that the U.S. has not concealed its aim to prepare for a substantial military confrontation. In response, North Korea asserted its right to legitimate self defense and vowed to defend the supreme interests of state security with overwhelming force. This warning follows two missile launches toward the East Sea conducted by North Korea last Wednesday and Thursday.

Separately, a military commentator in North Korea criticized a new U.S. nuclear strategy currently under review. The commentator claimed the strategy lowers the threshold for nuclear use by focusing on short range tactical nuclear weapons to cope with potential disputes involving China and Russia. North Korea warned that this strategy could destabilize the Asia Pacific region and that any adventurous move against Pyongyang would have catastrophic consequences.

The South Korean unification ministry noted that this statement is Pyongyang's first official response to the annual exercise this year. Based on past patterns, the ministry expects North Korea to continue issuing denunciations and staging provocations until the drills conclude.
