North Korean troops crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) on more than 20 occasions in August, military officials announced Wednesday. These incursions occurred on the eastern front starting in mid-August and surpassed the total of 17 reported cases for the entirety of 2025. A Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official stated that the intrusions were detected while North Korean troops conducted border fortification tasks in incomplete areas. The official added that the activity does not seem to indicate unusual activity or changes in North Korean operations.
Since 2024, North Korea has installed landmines and barbed-wire fences along the border. This follows a late 2023 declaration by Kim Jong-un defining inter-Korean relations as those between two hostile states. The South Korean military responded to the crossings by firing warning shots, which is required under rules of engagement after warning broadcasts are issued. The JCS is currently reviewing plans to increase surveillance, including the installation of monitoring devices inside the Demilitarized Zone northward.
