Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store stated on Wednesday that a plane carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was almost hit by a drone while taking off from Moldova. Zelenskyy was traveling to Oslo to attend the funeral of King Harald V. Store told the Norwegian broadcaster NRK that the incident reflects the reality the Ukrainian president faces. Moldovan authorities and Ukrainian sources provided a different account of the event. A Moldovan government spokesperson stated that the country's airspace was closed on Tuesday afternoon after a Russian drone entered from the direction of Ukraine. This closure delayed several flights, including the one carrying Zelenskyy. Moldovan police reported that the drone eventually crashed and exploded in a field approximately 160 kilometers from Chisinau International Airport. A source from the Ukrainian presidency described the Norwegian Prime Minister's claim that Zelenskyy was at risk as exaggerated, characterizing the event as a general airspace alert.

Reports from the Institute for the Study of War and other outlets indicate that a Russian Shahed type drone flew in Moldovan and Romanian airspace for about an hour on Tuesday. While the Moldovan ambassador to the US told CNN that the incursion was likely not an accident given Zelenskyy's presence at the airport, an official investigation is ongoing. The Kremlin has not commented on the incident.
