- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
Brent crude oil prices surpassed $100 a barrel on Wednesday for the first time since July as conflict between the United States and Iran intensified. The price surge follows a series of military exchanges including the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers by the US military. US Central Command stated these strikes were a response to two attempts by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps to hit a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles. The US further claimed the targeted tankers were part of a shadow network used to fund the Revolutionary Guard and its proxies.
Iran retaliated by launching at least 20 missiles at the Al Azraq US military base in Jordan. The Jordanian military reported that 18 of those missiles were intercepted while two landed in unpopulated areas. The Revolutionary Guard also claimed to have attacked two US warships and approximately eight to ten other vessels in the Gulf. Additionally, a Panama flagged tanker named the New Andros was hit by a drone in Iraqi waters, causing a fire on board. The UK Maritime Trade Operations confirmed that several merchant vessels in the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman were hit by disabling fire.
In a further escalation, Iran announced the creation of a new restricted maritime zone extending from the coast of Chabahar into the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Iranian officials warned that ships entering this zone without prior coordination would face sanctions. Meanwhile, Iran backed Houthi rebels in Yemen attacked oil facilities and cities in southern Saudi Arabia, prompting Saudi Arabia to conduct more than 40 airstrikes in Yemen.
Economic analysts note that the conflict has severely disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, a passage that previously handled 20 percent of global oil shipments. While some center and center right sources emphasize the strategic pressure and the risk of a wider war, center left sources highlight the humanitarian and regional instability. Some reports indicate that Iran is using the escalation as leverage to demand the release of frozen assets and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, while other analyses suggest Iran is attempting to influence US domestic politics ahead of November midterm elections.
