At least one person is dead and more than 30 remain missing after the MV Matui, an inter-island ferry, sank off the coast of Vanuatu. The vessel sank on Friday during a storm while traveling between the islands of Ambae and Santo. According to a statement from the office of Prime Minister Jotham Napat, 15 people have been accounted for alive.
Search and rescue operations are continuing, though the government is scaling back efforts in open waters to focus on the south east coast where currents may have carried survivors. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in New Caledonia is assisting the search, and a French Armed Forces aircraft was deployed on Sunday morning. Matai Seremaiah, a member of parliament for Luganville, stated that rescue efforts began after a crew member reached the coast by swimming to alert authorities.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the shipwreck. The Prime Minister's office stated that the tragedy appears to be the result of strong winds and the failure to heed marine warnings, as well as possible negligence including the overloading of the vessel. The Vanuatu police, the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority, and the ferry operator, Tui Shipping Agency, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
