One dead and three hospitalized after residential fire in Upper Serangoon

A man in his 60s died after a fire broke out in a third floor flat at Block 8 Lorong Lew Lian in Upper Serangoon on Tuesday, September 1. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the blaze at approximately 2.45pm. Upon arrival, firefighters observed black smoke emitting from the unit. An unconscious man was discovered in the living room and received cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he later died.

Three other people, women aged between 51 and 94, were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation and breathlessness. Approximately 30 residents were evacuated from the block as a precaution. The fire, which involved the contents of the living room, was extinguished using one water jet. Police stated that preliminary investigations do not suggest foul play, though the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Marine Parade Braddell Heights GRC MP Seah Kian Peng expressed his sadness over the death, describing the man as a friendly long term resident. Neighbors interviewed by the press noted that the victim often kept clutter outside his unit, with one resident stating she had previously advised him to discard items for emergency safety.
