One person was killed and three others were injured after an 18 year old man armed with a sword attacked the Brinell school in Fagersta, Sweden, on Friday. Local police chief Tommy Alriksson stated that officers entered the school, shot the suspect in the leg, and took him into custody. The victims include two boys between the ages of 12 and 17 who were seriously injured; one of them underwent emergency surgery, though both were reported to be in stable condition. A third person sustained minor injuries.
The attack occurred shortly after 2 p.m. local time as students were returning from summer holidays. The school, which serves approximately 450 students in a town of about 12,000 people, was placed on lockdown for over three hours. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson both issued statements of solidarity with the community of Fagersta.
Police are investigating the suspect's motives. Several reports indicate the attacker was a former student who wore a helmet during the assault. According to multiple sources, investigators are examining a now deleted TikTok account allegedly belonging to the suspect. This account reportedly contained videos referencing school massacres and posts praising Anders Behring Breivik, the far right terrorist responsible for the 2011 Norway attacks, as well as previous school attackers in Sweden. Some reports also mention that the suspect had a prior conviction for assault and had received psychiatric care.
This incident follows a series of violent attacks at Swedish educational institutions, including a 2015 sword attack in Trollhättan and a February 2025 shooting in Orebro that left 10 people dead.
