OpenAI announced on the 8th that it used a non public model, more powerful than GPT 6 Astra, to solve a super difficult mathematical equation known as the Navier Stokes equation. The equation is a fundamental part of fluid dynamics used in weather forecasting and is one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems with a 1 million dollar reward. According to OpenAI, the team ran approximately 10,000 AI agents in parallel for 88 hours to conclude that the equation cannot represent all 3D movements under certain conditions. The company released a paper exceeding 160 pages and results from the theorem prover Lean, though the findings have not yet undergone formal peer review.
The announcement has sparked significant controversy regarding the use of data. Tristan Backmaster, a mathematics professor at New York University, stated that the problem is not something a model could solve in a few days simply by being given the prompt. Spanish mathematicians Diego Córdoba and Luis Martínez Zoroa claim their year of research served as the basis for the announcement, asserting that the AI would not have solved it without their idea. These allegations suggest that OpenAI may have used data from other teams working on the same problem.
