OpenAI has announced the expansion of its business operations in Brazil, revealing that the country has become one of its largest markets globally. According to the company, Brazilian users now send approximately 215 million messages per day to ChatGPT, and the user base in the country has nearly doubled over the past year. Portuguese is currently the third most used language on the platform, and Brazil leads the world in the use of ChatGPT Images. The country is also the primary market in Latin America for the company's programming platform, Codex.
As part of its growth strategy, OpenAI is establishing several new partnerships. These include collaborations with the city of Sao Paulo, the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica (ITA), the legal startup ENTER, and the Estímulo program for small entrepreneurs. The company is also developing an AI powered private banker with Nubank and has expanded its partnership with Rappi to offer free access to ChatGPT Go for eligible customers. Additionally, corporate licenses for OpenAI in Brazil have grown fivefold compared to last year.
OpenAI is also investing in local research through an international program. The Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) will study the requirements for scientific institutions to convert AI use into research progress, while the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da USP will evaluate AI assisted clinical information infrastructure for the Unified Health System (SUS). These two projects are among 14 global initiatives sharing 1 million US dollars in funding and up to 1 million US dollars in API credits, with results expected in 2027.
During a press event in Sao Paulo, OpenAI strategy director Jason Kwon addressed concerns regarding geopolitical risks and potential US government restrictions on AI access. Kwon stated that it is not in the interest of the United States to restrict access to advanced AI models in a global competition. He argued that OpenAI has maintained a positive relationship with the Trump administration, noting that the company received quick approval for the international expansion of its latest frontier model, ChatGPT 5.6 Sol. When questioned about the appeal of open source Chinese models, Kwon argued that the long term investment value of OpenAI's technology outweighs current geopolitical tensions and that the costs of maintaining private infrastructure for open models can make OpenAI's offerings more competitive.
