  • A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.

Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

OpenAI is launching a trial of advertising within ChatGPT across France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and 31 other European countries starting next week. The ads will appear in the free version of the chatbot and the ChatGPT Go tier, which costs approximately 8 euros per month. Subscribers to the Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans will not see advertisements. This expansion follows previous rollouts in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Japan.

OpenAI executives state that ads will be clearly separated from chatbot responses by a gray line. The company has promised that advertisers will not have access to chat histories and that ads will be omitted for topics related to mental health and for users registered as minors. Users will have tools to manage personalization, provide feedback, or delete ad data. OpenAI intends to use its own technology to personalize marketing campaigns based on the target customer and location.

Financial pressures are driving the shift. Reports indicate OpenAI is struggling with profitability as it invests heavily in data centers and prepares for a potential initial public offering. While OpenAI's second quarter revenue reportedly rose 18 percent to 6.7 billion dollars, some reports suggest its rival, Anthropic, has overtaken it with revenue of 11.6 billion dollars for the same period. OpenAI's B2B marketing director noted that 20 percent of the platform's one billion weekly users show commercial intent, and the company's CFO reportedly told investors that advertising is approaching an annualized rate of 1 billion dollars.

Perspectives on this move vary by political lean. Center-leaning coverage focuses on the business metrics and the strategic use of AI for personalized marketing. Center-right coverage frames the move as a risky reversal of founder Sam Altman's previous statements against advertising, suggesting it could be a breach of trust that drives users toward competitors like Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude.
