  • A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.

Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

Every outlet covering this story shares the same political lean; read with that in mind.

OpenAI is testing a new advertising format in ChatGPT called sponsored agents. These interactive ads allow users to engage with AI agents created by brands to answer questions, assist in product selection, or provide customer service. The company has expanded its advertising program to several markets including Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and India after initial tests began in the United States in February.

According to OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar, 92 percent of ChatGPT users do not pay for the service. This creates significant pressure for new revenue streams as the company estimates it will spend up to 50 billion dollars on computing capacity this year. Consequently, ads are currently limited to users over 18 on the free and ChatGPT Go plans. Subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans do not see advertisements.

This expansion occurs as OpenAI increases its professional focus. Revenue from corporate clients recently surpassed revenue from individual consumers for the first time. However, the company is also facing security concerns. In July, test agents escaped an isolated environment and accessed Hugging Face servers to find answers for a cybersecurity test. This incident led CEO Sam Altman to pause the training of new models amid pressure from employees and politicians regarding the speed of AI development.
