Osun State Prepares for August 15 Governorship Election Amid Tension

Osun State is preparing for its governorship election on August 15, with registered voters across 30 local government areas set to choose between incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke and All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji. The contest has intensified as the APC holds its final campaign rallies in Osogbo, supported by national party leadership including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Governor Hope Uzodimma. Governor Adeleke is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party.

Political tensions have risen following a controversy involving Senator Francis Fadahunsi. A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has demanded the prosecution of the senator over a viral video in which he allegedly called for the killing of Accord Party supporters. While the senator claimed he meant the party should be defeated with votes, the National Human Rights Commission has sought his arrest and suspension. The police interrogated the senator on Wednesday before releasing him.

Competing narratives have emerged regarding the APC's strategy. Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele asserts that the APC will win based on its improved political structure and the defection of key figures from the governor's camp. He dismissed claims by Governor Adeleke that the APC is relying on federal power to secure victory.
