Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the suspension of eight officials and the initiation of criminal proceedings following a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad that killed 14 newborns. The officials include the hospital's executive director, the head of the neonatology department, two joint executive directors, two other doctors, the assistant director for security, and the head of the Capital Development Authority's emergency services. Prime Minister Sharif previously dismissed the Health Secretary, Aslam Ghauri, in response to the blaze.
An interim report from an investigative committee revealed that the third floor nursery lacked both a fire alarm and a sprinkler system. The inquiry also found that staff were not trained in fire response and that supervisory personnel were not on duty when the fire began. According to the report, a notification for emergency services was not made until six minutes after the fire started, and responders arrived 15 minutes after the call was placed. Only one baby was rescued from the 15 being cared for in the nursery.
Surveillance footage showed a nurse risking her life to save one infant before the flames spread. Prime Minister Sharif approved a recommendation to award this nurse the Sitara-i-Khidmat, a state honor for exceptional public service. The government has announced compensation of 5 million rupees, approximately 18,000 dollars, for each bereaved family.
The tragedy has triggered nationwide reviews of hospital fire safety. The government of Punjab, the most populous province, ordered an immediate audit of firefighting equipment and emergency response facilities in its hospitals. The interim report noted that while the precise source of ignition has not been conclusively established, the lack of protective systems contributed to the mass fatality event.
This incident follows another tragedy in June where 14 schoolchildren died when a tutoring center roof collapsed in Lahore. Prime Minister Sharif stated that those guilty of criminal negligence deserve no leniency.
